Advanced TCP/IP Settings in Windows 2003

Windows Server 2003 has some support TCP / IP as the new IP Version 6, automatically recognizes and Gateway Interface metric configuration and replace (Alternate configuration) allows you to receive an IP address when no DHCP.
Box Advanced TCP / IP allows you to configure settings related to DNS, WINS, specify multiple IP Address and Gateway (you can even use them when only one network card in your computer).
Dialog box to open Advanced TCP / IP Settings, click to connect the corresponding network in Network Connection, select Properties. In the “This connection uses the following items” select Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) and click Properties. Dialog in Internet Protocol (TCP / IP) Properties and click Advanced dialog Advanced TCP / IP Settings appears. You will see 4 cards:
- IP Settings – allows you to add the IP address or change of network card gateway.
- DNS – set up TCP / IP to use DNS
- WINS – Establishing TCP / IP to use WINS for computers can not access Active Directory.
- Options – set the filter TCP / IP ports used in communication TCP / IP
1. IP Settings tab
In the IP Addresses box listed a list of IP addresses that you assign to the network card. It allows you to assign IP addresses for a network card, which is used if you want to set multiple web-site on the same server and want to assign to each web-site a separate IP address.
You click Add to add the IP address (with the Subnet Mask), click Edit to edit and Remove to delete an address is available.
Default Gateways box in the middle is used if you want to use the Default Gateway for multiple network connections. Click on Add button below to add the Default gateway and determine the weight (Metric) for it. Weights reflect the speed, reliability of the Default gateway. If you have two Default gateway, with a weight of 10, one is 20, the Default gateway to the weight of 10 will be selected first. If your weight is to Automatic, the value of the Default Gateway will automatically be calculated, and the last Default gateway with weight baby will be selected.
2. DNS tab
At just below the “DNS server addresses, in order of use” is a box that listed in the list of DNS servers that your computer will use. You note the order of the DNS Server is very important. Your computer to always find the first DNS server in the list. If the first DNS server does not answer, your computer will go to the next DNS server in the list. You can easily change the order of DNS servers by selecting the DNS Server and press the arrow up or down the next.

3. WINS tab
WINS card is used to set up the issues related to WINS services, as specified WINS servers (for resolution from NetBIOS names to IP addresses), LMHOSTS file is used as a method to search for NetBIOS name and the NetBIOS settings for network connections.
The computer or application before using Windows 2000 NetBIOS resolution to IP addresses. If you have installed the Windows 2003 server, the client and the first Windows 2000 to use NetBIOS to communicate with it. In case your network does not have a computer or application before Windows 2000, you do not need to use NetBIOS, and Disable NETBIOS over TCP / IP to save, free system resources.
In the box “WINS addresses, in order of use” Add your WINS servers that the computer will use the resolution to IP addresses. Like DNS Server list, if you have multiple WINS servers, your computer will query the WINS server in the order of the list.
You on the CheckBox “Enable LMHOSTS lookup” so if the WINS server can not name the resolution LMHOSTS file locally will be used. LMHOSTS file is located in the folder \ WINDOWS \ system32 \ drivers \ etc in each computer. Full name is lmhosts.sam and you can open the edit as a text file. At the end of the file, you add the mapped line between name and IP address of the machine. If you already have a file lmhosts.sam standard, you can import it by clicking the button next to Import LMHOSTS.
Lastly NETBIOS settings. You select Default if you want to assign DHCP configuration NETBIOS, select Enable if you use static IP or DHCP is not configured NETBIOS and Disable if you do not want to use NETBIOS.

4. Option card (TCP / IP Filtering)
Option card allows you to configure the filter TCP / IP (TCP / IP Filtering), where you open the ports or protocols are allowed. The default TCP Ports, UDP Ports, IP Protocols is Permit All means all open. You switch to Permit Only then Add the TCP port, UDP that allows you to list. Then you only have to port to the list are allowed, all the rest will be prohibit.
