DNSBL is the short form for DNS-based blackhole list. It will have the list of all IP addresses of network that are linked to spam generators. The very first dnsbl was created in 1997 and this was called the Real Time Blackhole List” the list was useful because it gave away the identity of spam mail sender. Internet sites and ISPs used the list to block such spam mail senders. What is DNSBL used for?
DNSBL basically serves as a way to prevent wastage of network resources. If spam mail is being forwarded by the network all the time it really congests the network and slow down real packets. DNSBLs must have a domain name and a server where it can be posted in order to be effectively used by network ISP’s to block spam mail.
How does a DNSBL work?
If a DNSBL has to work efficiently, it is necessary for it to have three important aspects – one is a domain, a domain nameserver and a list of addresses. The DNSBL must be installed with DNS server software. The software installed must be able to have the huge number of addresses that are going to be stored in the DNSBL, so it is essential to seek software that has such features. Finally, the DNSBL server needs to be populated with addresses.
It is to be noted that a person’s domain can be included in a DNSBL. This can happen if someone falsely reports your domain as spam. This can have a negative image on your image so it is important to monitor domain and IP address using a blacklist monitoring tool.
